To get to residence 29 you probably walk a distance of oh 400 meters, 500 meters. So behind you is a coolie and then this huge, huge hill we call Mount Olympus and uhmmm and, and then the residence. So it’s sort of nicely tucked into the Coolie and it was, it was somewhat isolated and the only residence really next to it was what we called the New Dawn Centre for Native fellows recovering from alcoholism. So the two most despised members of society, the writers and the alcoholics were, were cast out at the edge of Fort San in these two residences.
Well, well one night uhmmm after a baseball game between the writers and, and these, these big gut-hung Native guys uhmmm one of the guys came up to me and said uhhh hey (*inaudible) I guess you guys had quite a night of it last night uhhh? And I tried to think, you know, uhmmm what last night? Yah we seen your party. We could see on the top there floor there. You had quite a party didn’t yah?
I thought, you know, I don’t think we had a party last night. I think we all went to bed early. Oh no it was real late we could see them uniforms. I said what uniforms? Everybody in white like doctors and nurses uhhh? And uhmmm I swear nobody in the residence in 29 was at a party wearing nurses and doctors uniforms. We were all in bed and, and yet he, he and his buddies claimed to see nurses and doctors in white milling around the top floor of our residence.
Well uhmmm as it happens uhhh one of the writers was every night fell into a kind of trance where she was doing rounds among tuberculosis patients and, and uhhh she had through an effort of her will to kind of get herself out of that, that uhmmm, that weird space that she was in and uhmmm and uhmmm I’m not gonna talk much about that now. I think it might be invading somebody’s privacy, but, but uhmmm a day later I went up to the same fellow. He was there home run hitter I think his name maybe was Isaac and I said Isaac I asked around and there, nobody had any parties. He said well I think there’s maybe something weird going on around here and he told me that, that their residence was now haunted. And the guys were so scared by the presences, these great big guys that they would go two to a room now. Everybody had his own room, but they would go two to a room. They would all light uhhh, uhhh sweet grass to purify the room and then the guys would sleep two to a bed and can you imagine a couple of 200 pound guys in the same bed just for security and that’s how they got through the night.
