The Ghost of Residence 29

Now was residence, residence 29 the, the most haunted building uhhh?
Well we, we thought, we thought it was because after our experience in residence 29 (*inaudible) in June of ’79 we, people would come to us who had also had experiences similar to what we had experienced and they would always, not always, but usually they would say yah it happened in residence 29 and uhhh and so the residence got quite a reputation uhhh from, from word of mouth that it was haunted. And, and uhhh I have to admit I’m not the, uhhh I’ve never had an experience where I’ve seen a ghost. I’ve never had an experience where uhhh I’ve been in touch with the world beyond uhhh but, but that summer some incredibly strange things happened uhhh, uhmmm so that it’d be really kind of silly to deny that, that uhhh that we weren’t, I don’t know, I’m gonna lose all my credibility when I say this, but I think the residence was haunted. I really think it was haunted.
At, at the time I had mononucleosis so I was doing a lot of sleeping and so because I was wrapped in the woolly blanket of sleep all the time, a lot of the time it was almost as though I was protected, psychically protected from what was going on because I didn’t have any ghostly visitations myself. I was sleeping through it all and, not through it all, but I was sleeping twice a day and not sleeping very well at night. But uhmmm what happened to start off was that Patrick Lane, I think Patrick Lane was in his (*inaudible) days. You know he, he wanted forbidden knowledge. I mean Patrick is uhhh, is uhhh a poet, a driven poet. Some poets are very self possessed; some are possessed. Patrick is possessed. Uhhh he has many demons and the, the demon of that summer was I want, I want to go as deep into the darkness as I can go and I, I don’t care if the knowledge I get there is forbidden, I want it. And so he was our (*inaudible). And uhmmm also down there was Kate Vitney (**phonetic) and Kate being the daughter of Angie McGaulski (**phonetic) was familiar with the spirit world. Now I’m, I’m only telling you what they told me. I, I don’t claim to know these things except this is what people told me, this is what Kate told me.
So Kate and Pat, together I think, said why, why don’t we have a séance? And of course it’s like kids at summer camp scaring the hell out of each other. Yah let’s get a Ouija board together and, and they got a table, maybe something like this table. It was a fairly big table with a smooth surface. They got an ashtray, a glass ashtray and they inverted it. Uhhh they, they, there was all the letters of the alphabet here. There was yes and no and I think there was some numbers as well. And so the questions began and the first night we got together, nothing else to do we were kind of exhausted, but we tried it for awhile in the common room of residence 29 next to the fire. And the fire was always going and uhhh, and uhmmm so somebody said “Is anyone there”? And we were all ready to giggle and, and, and we got, the cursor was held by Patrick on one side and, and by Kate on the other side and they had their fingers on the cursor and it hardly moved. “Is anyone there”? It hardly moved at all. Well finally either that night or the next night it said yes. It went over to yes. “What is your name”? T O M. And on the second night, for sure, we had met Tom.
