Beatrice Lavallee discusses the permit system in Qu’Appelle

Was if he couldn’t do anything very on our own type of thing, they used to have a permit even to go to the next reserve. Like I’m from Piapot. To go to Muskapeewee (**phonetic) we used to have to have a permit to be able to go. And those were difficult times, you know, to get this permit. You had to kind of plan in advance if you were going to go to Muskapeewee (**phonetic) to go get a, another permit that allowed you to sell one load of wood or one load of hay or a load of pickets.

You know we just couldn’t do like we do today. It was very hard for my people them days to uhhh have to go through the permit system they called it. And sometimes you’d wait for me and my grandma or my dad or my mom to come from Piapot. That’s a 10 mile ride in a wagon and horses to get to this Muskapeewee (**phonetic) and then to get to this farm instructor.
