1800s: Qu’Appelle name

The name Qu’Appelle is derived from an early Cree name Katepwe-Cipi or Kâ-têpwêwi-sîpy meaning What is calling? River.

Métis communities were forming in the Valley during the 1800s. The Métis began calling the river “Qu’Appelle”—a French translation of the original Cree name.
