1858: Hind
Henry Youle Hind, an English explorer, was employed by the colonial government in Upper Canada to determine if the North-West was suitable for settlement. Hind moved westerly from Toronto and, over a period of seven months, explored the region and its resources.
Hind noted that land west of the elbow was fertile and he encouraged settlement.
