1883: Canadian Pacific Railway and Settlement
The Canadian Pacific Railway was established in southern Saskatchewan in 1883.
The train brought in a new wave of settlers seeking to establish homesteads upon the free land granted under the Dominion Lands Act. The act offered conditional ownership of a full quarter section, with the stipulation that the landowner break a specified number of acres and establish a homestead.
An estimated 400,000 pioneers had settled in the area by the beginning of WWI (1914).
